This hand knotted wool antique Chinese Peking area rug features a group of three flowering cloisonne vases floating in an open abrashed indigo navy blue field. The number three represents the three important stages in a man’s life: birth, marriage and death. The three Chinese cloisonne vases contain bamboo, chrysanthemums, peonies, and blooming lotus flowers. Bamboo is a represents long life and symbolizes longevity. Chrysanthemums represent long life. Peonies represent unparalleled beauty and honour. Blooming lotuses symbolize purity and perfection because their clean vibrant blooms emerge from the mud of swamps and marshes. The center design is surrounded by two small Chrysanthemum bouquets and two small vases filled with Chrysanthemum flowers. The number two represents good things come in pairs. Three vases are grouped in each corner spandrel. It is enclosed with a contrasting smokey taupe border which is adorned with swirling, elegant floral vine scrolls, floral sprigs. Two floral vases and a teapot symbolizing tranquillity grace each border corner. An inner cartouche guard band frames the center composition.
