Description
20856 Vintage Beni MGuild Moroccan Rug, 05'10 x 08'09.
This hand-knotted wool vintage Beni M'Guild Moroccan rug features an all-over diamond lattice pattern spread across the abrashed field. The double lines composed of arrows crisscross symmetrically, creating a lozenge trellis. Each lozenge is filled with a diamond, Burdock, cross, and secondary protection symbols. The tribal symbols of diamonds typically symbolize womanhood and fertility. Some of the lozenges are filled with protection symbols and meant to capture evil spirits. In Moroccan rugs, male motifs often appear on the outer portions of the composition, framing and enclosing the female motifs. This presentation can be seen as symbolizing fertility, as well as protection and the sanctuary of the family. Though deceptively simple, this beautiful vintage Moroccan rug is clearly laced with meaning, cultural significance and warrants a myriad of interpretations beyond its Moroccan milieu.
