Description

78331 Late 19th Century Antique Persian Serapi Rug, 11'03 x 15'04.

Emanating a sense of regal sophistication, this hand-knotted wool Late 19th Century Persian Serapi rug is a striking testament to the artistry of Persian weaving traditions. At its heart lies a resplendent octofoil medallion, its eight-pointed lobes radiating around a delicate central floral motif. This mesmerizing medallion, adorned with meticulous geometric detailing, serves as the focal point of the composition, drawing the viewer into a world of intricate craftsmanship and harmonious design. Flaming palmette pendants gracefully extend from either end of the medallion, reinforcing the symmetrical beauty and dynamic movement that defines this masterful work of textile art.

The abrash red field of the Serapi rug is a canvas of organic elegance, teeming with a lush array of stylized blooming palmettes, serrated leaves, curling vinery, lotus blossoms, and rosettes. These motifs, rich in symbolism, echo the themes of prosperity, renewal, and the enduring connection between humanity and nature. The composition achieves a delicate balance between structure and spontaneity, as the free-flowing floral elements intertwine with geometric precision, embodying the fusion of tribal and classical Persian influences characteristic of the finest Serapi rugs.

Surrounding this magnificent field, the ivory corner spandrels serve as luminous counterpoints, their light-toned expanse adorned with graceful botanical motifs and delicate angular vines, reminiscent of the refined designs found in 19th-century Serapi carpets. These spandrels act as elegant architectural elements, framing the octofoil medallion and enhancing the overall sense of depth and dimension within the rug’s intricate pattern. The spandrels' floral embellishments further reinforce the continuity of the design, seamlessly integrating with the naturalistic imagery found throughout the field.

Encasing this exquisite composition is a classic turtle vine scroll border, its rhythmic procession of stylized palmettes and curling vines set against a vibrant royal blue background. This framing element provides a dynamic contrast to the deep red field while harmonizing with the central medallion’s blue detailing. The border is further accentuated by an inner and outer floral meander guard band, woven on a soft pink-terracotta background, adding an additional layer of refined ornamentation. This delicate interplay of colors and motifs ties the entire piece together, creating a visual symphony of Persian artistry. A treasure of both design and history, this antique Persian Serapi rug is a testament to the enduring legacy of master weavers and their unparalleled craftsmanship.
