Description

79173 Late 19th Century Antique Persian Malayer Rug, 04'03 x 06'00.

This stunning hand-knotted wool distressed antique Persian Malayer rug, woven in the late 19th century, tells a tale of intricate design and timeless craftsmanship. The centerpiece of the Malyer rug features a radiant medallion, adorned with delicate Herati motifs that dance within a diamond shape. These motifs are anchored at either end by arrow pendants, symbolic of strength and direction. The vivid colors of deep navy blue and crimson, juxtaposed with golds and soft blues, create a symphony of hues that evoke a sense of warmth and mystery. The richness of the wool adds depth to the design, while the medallion’s symmetry reflects the perfect balance of tradition and artistry.

Surrounding the central medallion, four bold red stepped medallions emerge, each graced with symbolic representations of the Tree of Life, turtles, and geometric shapes. These medallions are not mere decoration but are steeped in the meanings of growth, protection, and connection to the earth. The turtles, symbols of wisdom and endurance, travel across the woven landscape, while the geometric shapes provide a rhythm to the composition, grounding the intricate narrative of the rug. Each element is a testament to the Persian artisans’ deep understanding of the symbolic power of design.

The Malayer rug’s navy blue field is alive with a captivating array of motifs: eight-point stars, boteh symbols, and three-prong motifs, each carrying its own mystery and significance. The hooked corner spandrels, in sky blue, frame the design with an enchanting blend of rosettes and botehs, some ambiguous and otherworldly, inviting the observer to interpret the motifs in personal, intimate ways. The field itself is a cosmic canvas, where the stars reflect the heavens, and the symbols reach toward the earth, joining the two in a harmonious embrace.

Encircling this mesmerizing tableau is a Shekeri border, flanked by inner and outer carnation meander guard bands that protect and enhance the design. The Shekeri border, with its rhythmic movement, complements the rug’s overall flow, while the guard bands add a layer of intricate detail that keeps the viewer’s eye engaged. The fusion of geometric precision and organic, symbolic motifs creates a visual experience that feels both timeless and alive. This antique Malayer rug, woven with passion and care, brings an air of history, elegance, and symbolism into nearly any space, forever whispering the stories of its creators and their ancient, rich traditions.
