Description

79179 Antique Persian Heriz Rug, 08'01 x 11'02.

A luminous tableau of tradition and artistry, this hand-knotted wool antique Persian Heriz rug from the early 20th century stands as a majestic emblem of Northwest Iran’s enduring legacy. At its heart lies a radiant octofoil medallion, each of its eight arms unfurling with geometric balance and crowned by flaming palmette pendants—fiery motifs that seem to blaze with ancestral strength. Rendered in crimson, midnight blue, ivory, and pink, the prominent medallion commands the eye like a heraldic emblem, while delicate floral scrollwork, linear tendrils, and stylized rosettes bloom from its core with rhythmic grace.

The rich red field surrounding the medallion brims with tribal enchantment—an orderly garden of stylized florals, birds, blooming palmettes, serrated leaves, and jagged vinery stretching upward in symmetrical procession. These botanical motifs and tribal symbols, rendered with rectilinear poise, whisper stories of faith, fertility and continuity. Within this ornate expanse, each motif pulses with symbolic weight: the tulip, representing prosperity; the stylized blossoms, harbingers of spring and renewal; and the dynamic palmettes, protectors of hearth and heritage.

The ivory corner spandrels offer visual respite, their soft, pale glow cradling the composition like parchment margins around a sacred text. Here, abstract foliate motifs and jagged trellises cascade with calligraphic precision, echoing the central design in inverted reflection. The contrast between the alabaster tones of the spandrels and the saturated red of the field enhances the composition’s grandeur, giving the piece a celestial symmetry as though the medallion were radiating from the heart of a sanctuary.

A stately navy blue Herati border encircles the entire tableau, bearing an enduring procession of floral palmettes and rosettes in lively tones of red, blue, and tan. These grand, stylized blooms march in noble succession, flanked by inner and outer floral meander guard bands, their sinuous curves softening the structure with lyrical grace. Together, the borders frame this Persian masterpiece with regal definition, preserving within their confines a woven saga of cultural identity, nature’s abundance, and ancestral pride. This antique Heriz rug is not merely an artifact of craftsmanship, but a timeless ode to the art of storytelling through wool and time.
