This hand-knotted wool vintage Persian Heriz rug features a large serrated octofoil medallion with palmette pendants floating in the center of an abrashed red field. The octagram, or eight-pointed star, often appears as a medallion design in Heriz rugs. Sometimes referred to as the “Seal of the Prophets,” the octagram symbolizes faith and spirituality. A variety of geometric floral motifs surround the medallion in an intricate arrangement of palmettes, serrated leaves, boteh, buds, blooms, rosettes, diamonds, and small amulets. Stepped corner spandrels echo the designs of the medallion and field, while a line of boteh along the edges connect the spandrels. A stylized palmette main border and running water guard borders pull together colors from throughout the piece into a unified, well-harmonized palette.
