51748 Vintage Turkish Oushak Rug, 03'06 x 04'08.
This hand-knotted wool vintage Turkish Oushak prayer rug features a Mihrab design set against an abrashed scarlet red field. The first prayer rugs were made circa the mid-15th century in the Oushak region of Turkey and have been produced continuously ever since. These rugs always contain a representation of a prayer niche, known as a Mihrab. In the case of this vintage Oushak rug, the latched-hooked arch of the Mihrab is adorned by diamonds, which are seen to protect against evil. A tree of life motif, symbolizing the link between heaven and Earth, dominates the space within the arch. Two delicate trefoil flowers sprout outwards from the borders into the field. The innermost and largest border features an elaborate quatrefoil calyx motif. The middle and outer borders feature simpler rosette and Laleh Abbasi designs. Delicate barber’s pole listels separate the larger borders from one another, creating a sense of order and definition. A bright and saturated color palette is toned down by just the right amount of age-wear. This charming vintage Oushak rug would be a delightful presence in any room it inhabits.
