This hand-knotted wool vintage Turkish Oushak runner features a mihrab, or prayer niche, design with repeated mosque motifs along the center of an abrashed field. Sometimes called a landscape carpet or cemetery carpet, the design of mosques or houses with trees was once thought to illustrate an Islamic cemetery. The central mihrab is outlined with a beige and coffee colored running water motif. Additional stylized geometric floral designs flank each upper corner with some small blooms protruding from the border into the field. A triple border frames the composition. The two matching inner borders in ocher and maroon feature an interesting tree motif meander, while an abrashed outer border is composed of lappets that repeat the tree of life motif. This vintage Oushak runner pulls together an assortment of Islamic symbols into a unique and striking composition, but it is the series of mosque landscapes along the center that really catch the eye, resulting in a dynamic runner would enliven any space.
