This hand knotted wool vintage Turkish Oushak rug features a large polygonal center medallion adorned with Elibelinde pendants floating in the center of an abrashed brick red field. The classic Elibelinde motif, also known as the “hands on hips” or goddess motif, is thought to represent motherhood and fertility. Both the medallion and corner spandrels contain abstract floral motifs, scrolling acanthus leaves, and ram’s horns. Additionally, yin and yang pearl drops outline the medallion and spandrels. Though originally adopted from Chinese philosophy, the yin and yang symbol in Anatolian culture is thought to represent love and unison, or, going even further, fertility and the harmony between man and woman. Pulling together colors and motifs from throughout the composition, the border features a graceful rosette and lanceolate leaf meander design.
