Description
78738 Antique Turkish Ghiordes Silk Prayer Rug, 04'00 x 05'03.
Hailing from the northeast of İzmir in western Anatolia (now in Turkey), Ghiordes prayer rugs are characterized by their distinct design elements and historical significance in carpet weaving. Ensuring durability and longevity, they are crafted from high-quality silk and feature an angular prayer niche, known as a mihrab, which indicates the direction of Mecca for Muslim prayers. Surrounding the niche are decorative spandrels, often adorned with geometric patterns or floral motifs. Ghiordes rugs are valued for their craftsmanship, intricate designs, and importance in facilitating the practice of Islamic prayer.
Given its delicate silk composition and age, the fibers are susceptible to breakage, making it unsuitable for placement on the floor. We strongly advise framing the piece to ensure its preservation and enhance its visual presentation.- Abrash.
